A Deadly Obsession: Dark Romance Suspense by Vi Carter

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Choppy storyline. Unrealistic actions. STUPID CHARACTERS.

This whole book is based on Ella (the female MC) competing with other girls to be chosen as the future wife of Lucas (the male MC), whom is the son of a mafia boss? I don’t even know if it was the mafia, or some rich idiots playing at criminals. I don’t even care anymore 😊

All her life, Ella had been groomed for this competition. It was literally pitiful and sickening how, at the beginning of the book, she only cared about being chosen as basically a trophy wife:

The horrible thought of not becoming Lucas’s wife has everything in me freezing. I wouldn’t know what to do. He has been everything my entire life. I push the thought away like it is a dirty thing.

She’s never met him before. It was really, really ridiculous reading her thoughts. Ella’s type is not really a heroine that I could grow to like and respect.

And, even after they finally meet, and Lucas doesn’t end up meeting her expectations:

I had thought one look at me and it would be love at first sight.

FACEPALM This is the real world sweetheart, you’re not 5 years old 🙂

So it’s safe to say Lucas acts like an old bear with a stick up his arse thorn in his paw throughout the story. For being a ‘dark romance’, he was a pretty tame hero in my opinion. Topping that, he was also pretty boring.
For whatever reason, he becomes ‘obsessed’ with Ella. I had no idea why. She was painfully dumb, with a stale personality, acting stupidly, and ‘excusing herself’ from rooms to go cry prettily in her bedroom whenever a situation wasn’t to her liking every other chapter.

The choppy storyline also victimises other characters. As an example, this other girl in the competition (for mysterious reasons) automatically likes Ella on sight. They speak for barely 10 minutes together. And this is what she says:

“I’m here if you need to talk.” She smiles softly. “We are sisters now.” She sounds so sincere.

SISTERS??!! I was laughing my arse off.

Like I’ve said already, this is ridiculous.

Another girl called Vicky, on the other hand, is a carbon-copy-jealous-other-woman that hates Ella on sight instead. In a scene, Vicky physically hurts Ella, and as a result she ‘disappears’. The other girls are told Vicky had been returned home as being violent is against the rules. Some of the other girls are worried Vicky got ‘punished’ or even killed. For whatever reason, Ella decides she just HAS to know what happened to Vicky!

It didn’t matter, what mattered right now is finding out what happened to Vicky, and I will find out even if that meant playing nice with Master Lucas.

I really couldn’t understand her reasoning. I wasn’t sure if that was yet another stupid action of Ella, or the writer trying to string along the storyline

But I digress. After… what? Three days? Both Lucas and Ella are pretty chummy with each other and having deeeeep feelings:

She swallows as she stares up at me. Her wide green eyes are still brimming with pain. Pain I have caused. My father had humiliated her and I had sat stiff and shut off all my emotions. I couldn’t interject, if he knew how I felt about her, what would he do? I couldn’t have Ella hurt. So I needed to make the pain a bit less for her.

I close the distance and place a kiss on her forehead. I linger longer than I should. It’s on my lips to apologize again, but I don’t.

YAWN

Goodbye.
